Lake Almanor Watershed Group (LAWG)

Community-Led Watershed Collaborative

About

Formed in 2005, the Lake Almanor Watershed Group (LAWG) works to protect and improve water quality, riparian habitat, and wetland ecosystems in the Lake Almanor Basin while supporting sustainable local economies. Originally established by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors, the group served as a formal advisory body from 2005 to 2013.

Since 2013, LAWG has operated as an independent watershed collaborative and continues to monitor ecological conditions through annual water quality assessments, measuring variables like dissolved oxygen, nutrient levels, and algal concentrations. These findings are compiled in publicly available reports prepared by a retired contractor from CSU Chico.

What We Do

LAWG leads annual water quality assessments. These data-driven insights inform management decisions and help build public understanding about the health of Lake Almanor and its tributaries. Each year, a water quality monitoring report is produced by LAWG and published here for public access and review.

Sierra Institute’s Role

The Sierra Institute provides coordination, technical support, and funding assistance to LAWG. Our partnership ensures the group can continue producing credible data, convening diverse stakeholders, and stewarding long-term watershed health.
