Entry Level Staff Accountant

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment seeks an enthusiastic individual to fill the position of Entry Level Staff Accountant. In cooperation with the organizations accounting tam and external Certified Public Accountant, the selected candidate will assist in the execution of the organization’s accounting functions, including accounting software implementations, grant financial management, payroll allocations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and related financial reporting. The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Sierra Institute’s Financial Manager and will work closely with program staff on identified grants, agreements, and contracts. The ideal candidate will have an interest in learning the critical components of the accounting cycle and how they are tailored to fit the needs of a not-for-profit organization. Some experience with bookkeeping or data management is a plus, but not required. This position is a fantastic start to a career in not-for-profit accounting and project management; illustrating a level of understanding of financial systems and processes builds a foundation for future career aspirations.

Environmental Remediation Specialist - Rural Brownfields

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is seeking a collaborative professional to fill the full-time position of Environmental Remediation Specialist Rural-Brownfields. The selected individual will assist in unlocking the reuse potential of rural contaminated sites and play a key role in advancing the organization's work in rural brownfields remediation and redevelopment. This position involves working closely with Sierra Institute staff, agencies, and community members to inventory, assess, and remediate brownfields sites. The Rural Brownfields Specialist must be capable of balancing various tasks, from technical analysis to community involvement, and will contribute to creating opportunities for environmentally conscious business development in rural communities throughout the Sierra.

Wood Utilization Project Coordinator

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment’s Wood Utilization Project Coordinator will advance development of the organization’s wood product campus at Crescent Mills, and will advance the critical bridge between landscape management to wood utilization and infrastructure development projects. This is an exciting opportunity to lead development of an innovative wood product campus and novel work that represents the cornerstone of landscape restoration and community revitalization efforts following the 2021 Dixie Fire. This is a multiyear position with long-term growth potential for increased project responsibilities and potential for assuming increased staff leadership responsibilities.

Watershed Restoration Project Manager

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment seeks a qualified individual to fill the position of Watershed Restoration Project Manager with responsibilities for a growing suite of watershed restoration projects. The Sierra Institute’s watershed restoration work emphasizes the collaborative development of meadow and stream restoration and forest road infrastructure improvements that improve ecological function and protect critical aquatic resources. The current project portfolio is centered on a million-acre focal landscape for the South Lassen Watersheds Group, a collaborative addressing forest and watershed management, climate resilience, and economic development in critical upper watersheds of Battle Creek, Mill Creek, Deer Creek, and the upper North Fork of the Feather River.
This is a tremendous opportunity for a talented natural resource professional who is excited to join a collaborative organization expanding capacity for restoration across the Northern Sierra and Southern Cascades. The selected individual will work closely with Sierra Institute staff, non-governmental partners, and federal land management agencies to advance watershed restoration as part of multiple large landscape restoration projects to improve forest resilience across the only anadromous watersheds on public lands in the Sierra Nevada, as well as support post-fire restoration in the Dixie Fire footprint.

SEASONAL POSITIONS
Wilderness Fuels Module
The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute), in cooperation with the Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) is hiring a Wilderness Fuels Module (WFM) Crew to perform fuels management in LAVO to promote future prescribed and/or managed fire activities in wilderness areas of the park.
This work will also directly contribute to increasing fire resiliency of critical habitat for Northern Goshawk and California Spotted Owl. The WFM Crew, under the direction of the Crew Leaders, Sierra Institute support staff, and LAVO specialists, will be responsible for working as a team in safely falling, bucking, and limbing live and dead trees and constructing fireline using predominantly non-mechanized equipment (e.g., crosscut saws, axes, etc.) in undeveloped wilderness areas and some non-wilderness areas.

Collaborative Forestry Field Technicians
The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute) is hiring Collaborative Forestry Technicians to perform forestry work necessary to advance critical timber management and restoration treatment on public and private lands. Technicians may work on various projects being advanced by Sierra Institute in collaboration with diverse partners (USFS, NPS, private landowners, etc.).
This is a unique opportunity to advance pivotal collaborative forest and watershed restoration projects that aim to protect rural communities from catastrophic wildfire and restore the unique landscapes of the northern Sierra and southern Cascades.

Vegetation Management Technician
Sierra Institute in collaboration with Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) is seeking to fill four Vegetation Management Technician roles. The selected candidates will engage in tasks such as monitoring native and invasive plants, performing invasive plant control with mechanical and chemical methods, and participating in plant restoration processes. Physical demands include extensive hiking and carrying equipment. This role not only allows for immersive interaction with LAVO's diverse ecosystems but also offers a chance for collaboration on projects in neighboring regions and the potential to broaden experience with different resource management practices.
