Taylorsville Community Defense Zone

Strengthening wildfire resilience in and around Taylorsville, California

Overview

The Taylorsville Community Defense Zone (TCDZ) project strengthens wildfire resilience in and around Taylorsville, California. Implemented in collaboration with nine private landowners, this project treated approximately 300 acres through a combination of hand and mechanical thinning. These treatments restored a healthier forest by reducing small-diameter tree density.

Following thinning, prescribed fire was introduced to reduce surface fuels and promote ecological balance. This two-step approach enhances overall ecosystem resilience, leaving forests better prepared to withstand future wildfire events. The project also supported broader landscape-scale efforts by connecting to Forest Service treatments on the Plumas National Forest. This strategic coordination helps create a contiguous zone of fire-adapted, healthy forest.

Next Phase

Sierra Institute is now launching the second phase: the Indian Valley Community Defense Zone (IVCDZ). This expansion builds on the TCDZ’s success by extending work to private lands along Arlington Road and into Genesee.
