Robbers Creek Watershed Restoration Project

Overview

The Robbers Creek Watershed Restoration Project is a restoration effort on the Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest, focused on improving forest, meadow, and watershed health within the Robbers Creek drainage. The project is being led by the South Lassen Watersheds Group collaborative. Covering roughly 5,000 acres, the project aims to increase resilience to wildfire and drought through a combination of forest thinning and fuels reduction, meadow and riparian restoration, and hydrologic improvements that restore natural water storage and floodplain function. Key objectives include improving upland forest structure, restoring degraded meadows and aspen stands, enhancing aquatic and wildlife habitat, and reducing long-term wildfire risk. Nearing the end of restoration work, Robbers Creek is returning to a state of improved ecological function while continuing to provide important recreational and economic resources to local and downstream communities.

The project focuses on:

  • Hydrologic & Meadow Restoration: Restoring natural hydrologic function by slowing and spreading water across the landscape beaver dam analog (BDA) structures, removal of encroaching lodgepole pine, and placement of large woody debris to improve meadow and riparian resilience.

  • Forest Health & Fuels Reduction: Improving upland forest structure and resilience through targeted thinning and fuels reduction to reduce wildfire risk, enhance forest health, and support long-term watershed function.
  • Species Recovery: Protecting and expanding one of the largest remaining populations of the rare Lassen paintbrush (Castilleja lassenensis) through habitat restoration and species-specific management actions.

A primary focus of this initiative is Swain Meadow. Where willows are present process-based restoration techniques are being used to raise the water table and support the recovery of native wet meadow vegetation and critical meadow bird habitat. In larger incised channels, hydrologic restoration consists of reconstruction of riffles. By slowing the flow of water, these interventions create a more resilient environment for rare species like the Lassen paintbrush. Additionally, upstream restoration work includes thinning conifer growth that threatens to “dry out” the meadows and strategically placing woody material in the channel to restore natural stream patterns.

This project is a model of collaborative conservation, uniting a diverse group of partners including Sierra Institute, Point Blue, Forest Creek Restoration, Symbiotic Restoration, The Institute for Applied Ecology, and the Lassen National Forest – Almanor Ranger District. By leveraging collective scientific expertise, these partners are working to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Robbers Creek watershed.
