For more than 10 years, Sierra Institute for Community and Environment has actively engaged in local health projects to improve health access, reduce disparities, and foster community decision-making. Some previous projects include: Proyecto Salud, a multi-year effort to improve health care access and empower Latina women and young children through participatory involvement, focus groups to increase community participation in the Healthy Plumas Vision 2020 project, and an assessment of the healthcare system in Plumas to identify broken infrastructure and establish collaboration among facilities. Northern California Telehealth Network Planning Program
Through a U.S. Department of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant, the Sierra Institute for Community and Environment will partner with eleven healthcare providers in rural Northern California to improve and expand telehealth programs by exploring the possibility to establish the Northern California Telehealth Network (NCTN). Due to large distances between communities, transportation challenges, and a shortage of specialty services in remote rural towns, telehealth is a critical tool for linking patients and practitioners to secure needed health care services in this region. This program will encourage the growth of local telehealth utilization and services by conducting a needs assessment and creating a strategic plan to build a network of telehealth providers in the region. Such a network will help streamline administrative standards and billing procedures, connect local specialists to patients at NCTN facilities, connect practitioners to training opportunities and provide support for initial telehealth implementation throughout facilities in the seven county region. By building a support group of twenty facilities at various stages of telehealth program implementation, the NCTN will give partners opportunities to learn from each other, share the burden of the trial and error process, create Best Management Practices and more.
