Proyecto Salud Launches Phase II - Improving Language Access in Healthcare: Sierra Institute is pleased to launch Phase II of Proyecto Salud, its Latino healthcare access project. The project will work in partnership with local organizations and community members to improve language access and cultural competency in health and wellness services for Plumas County’s Latino community. In early 2007, the Sierra Institute completed a two-year participatory assessment of health and healthcare needs with the county’s growing Latino community. Next to lack of insurance and affordable care, language access (interpretation and translation) rose to the top of healthcare access needs.

Kusel testifies on Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act: On March 1, 2007, Jonathan Kusel testified at hearings of the Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The hearings focused on the reauthorization of Public Law 106-393, the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, which expired in 2006. P.L. The Act provides funds for rural schools and roads, as well as mandating collaboration for forest restoration through citizen Resource Advisory Committees. The Sierra Institute’s 2006 national assessment of the legislation’s outcomes and lessons is informing the debate in Congress about reauthorization.

Lake Almanor goes GoogleEarth: On March 28, 2007, Sierra Institute launched an innovative tool for community members to take a virtual tour of the Lake Almanor Basin. The new tour allows visitors to “fly over” a three-dimensional landscape and learn about the watershed. For example, users can see locations where endangered species have been sighted, or how the watershed is zoned, or where all of the streams are. This virtual tour uses a free software program called “GoogleEarth” that you can download onto your computer. Come take a tour and learn about the Lake Almanor watershed!
