About Us
Overview
The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is dedicated to advancing rural community well-being and sustainable ecosystem management.
Through research, education, and community capacity building, we work to bridge understanding of and build collaboration for stewardship and sustainable rural community development.
Founded in 1993, the Sierra Institute is a non-profit organization based in the northern Sierra town of Taylorsville, California, with associates in Claremont and Arcata, CA and Portland, OR.
We work locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally to advance the health and well-being of rural places and people. Our work includes:
- Developing indicators to measure, monitor, and assess rural community well-being and ecosystem health.
- Identifying strategies for mitigating adverse resource management practices and policies.
- Implementing applied research related to community development (e.g., poverty, worker displacement, health and healthcare, community capacity).
- Facilitating participatory applied research, education, and dialogue to advance community-based approaches to development that are socially, culturally, economically, and ecologically sustainable.
- Designing and facilitating public involvement activities.
- Educating about the use of participatory research, evaluation, and monitoring to address social issues.
- Building bridges between scientists, land managers, and local community efforts to assure consistent and responsive state and national policy.
- Coordinating efforts among community groups locally, regionally, and nationally to understand the interconnections between community well-being and sustainable resource management.
Programs
The Sierra Institute partners with diverse communities and decision-makers to address four major program areas: Socioeconomic Monitoring and Assessment, Community Forestry and Natural Resources, Environmental Justice, and Rural Community Development and Capacity Building.
