The Sierra Institute works with governmental agencies to provide third-party assessments of legislation and programs that affect rural communities and environments, and to facilitate public involvement processes. Examples of these include:
- Assessment of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, for the US Departments of Interior and Agriculture
- Assessment for the National Park Service of the socioeconomic impacts of the flood-induced closure of Yosemite National Park on nearby communities
- Coordination of the Almanor Basin Watershed Advisory Committee for Plumas County
We also work on fee-for-service-contracts for organizations and agencies. Examples of these include:
- Refinement of the Montreal Process indicators of community and socioeconomic health for the U.S. Government
- Serving as sociologists on forest certification teams for the Forest Stewardship Council
